Control Group
We also came up with the idea of doing a control group of people who do not go to Goldsmiths to see of their views are similar.
Interview this Thursday
Our newest plan is to meet up on Thursday and begin the interviews and filming.
We aim to interview anyone we come across on campus, and 10-20 ordinary members of the public as a control group and to have something to compare our results from within the uni to.
Everyone will be involved at some point during the day, working around our own schedules.

Finished Interviewing Material
I've decided to put 6 people on the poster instead of 9, because I think it'll fetch far more satisfying results. This is because instead of 3 of each (student/teaching staff/ordinary staff), we now have 1 lecturer, 2 non teaching staff and 3 students. Let me know who you think is who? (I'll assemble their real roles at the bottom)
It would be great if we could start interviewing this week or as soon as so we can get a good start on the final project.

This provides context for why we're doing the study.

Social Experiment/Interview/Research
So after a super awkward week of asking to take miscellaneous people's pictures, I have nearly finished the ''piece of paper with people's pictures on, and we ask people on campus where they reckon the person in the image fits'' thing. (And will post up a preview when it's properly finished).
So I was beginning to think on the sorts of questions we will ask and to whom.
-The criteria of the people interviewed I think, will have to, simply be, whether they have an association to Goldsmiths. i.e If they study(ied)/work(ed) etc. for the uni then they're fit for interview? (thoughts??).
----------------------
-My sort of plan is that we ask someone if we can ask them a few questions for our project.
1) Present them with the card or whatever with the 9 people's pictures on. The pics will be all randomly placed so theres no clue for them.
2) Tell them there's 3 students, 3 people who just generally work at Uni and 3 members of teaching staff. And that we want them to try and pick out who they reckon fits the category, just by looking at their face.
3) After making note of their decisions, I want to ask some follow up questions; like, why did you pick them for this job? etc. ((Will post a -sort of- questionnaire/tick box of questions to ask at bottom)) This is hopefully where we will get the juicy opinions we're after. And perhaps we could film them answering the questions and put it in our final video.
4) Couldn't get the image any bigger than this sadly, but it reads:
And then we will just write yes or no or whatever in the boxes next to. 8 spaces was the max powerpoint would allow me to do but I think we agreed to interview 50ish people? So will print off a couple of these grids.
Have you ever experienced
discrimination based on your sex/gender/race/ nationality within University?
|
Do you think there are more males in
higher academic roles?
|
Do you think white lecturers are
preferred over non-white lecturers?
|
Do you think there is a need for groups
such as the
‘Women in Humanities Project?’
|
Do you think we need to de-colonise the curriculum?
|
Would you
like to learn about a non-white
/non-male perspective?
|
Would
you say there are male and female subjects? If so what?
|
From
within your department/Work space: Do you think the non-white to white ratio of staff is
ideal?

Goldsmiths' own Dr Kate Devlin on why we need women in Computing
I came across this amazing letter by one of the proffs in the computing dept after I was telling my housemate about the project we're doing. He said that there's a good amount of women teaching his course (computer science) and on it as well. I was thrilled.
He then went on to tell me that Dr Kate had written this letter in response to some 'dickheads' sexist remarks last year. Don't quote me on that as I have not fact checked, but how badass is this woman?
I'd love to perhaps set up an interview of why she thought it was important to write this, and why having more women in Computing is beneficial to everyone. -If we have the time/resources etc.
*Had to screenshot from my phone but is all there!
Research
Before finding out the perception and opinions of Goldsmiths students on the issue of Race and Gender equality in institutions, I thought it would be a good idea to see the opinions of students from another university (UCL). This could help us determine if this was a big issue within society and get a general understanding of people's opinion on this matter. While I was there I got approximately 26 students and 4 lecturers to take part in this questionnaire.
The results were pretty insightful; approximately 40% said they would strongly agree or just agree that the issue of gender inequality within institutions like universities was a big problem. I was fairly shocked that this figure was so low, considering that as a group and a class we see this as a big problem ourselves. The significantly low figures for the statements 'gender equality has already been achieved within institutions like universities' and 'the university actively promotes gender equality' on the basis of people either strongly agreeing or just agreeing, shows that more needs to be done to promote this particular matter and therefore provides us a reason to politicize this problem.
